The Scottish Heart Health Study aimed to establish the levels of coronary heart disease risk factors in a cross-sectional sample of Scottish men and women aged 40-59 drawn from different localities; to determine the extent to which the geographical variation in coronary heart disease can be explained in terms of the geographical variation in risk factor levels; to assess the relative contribution of the established risk factors and some more recently described ones to the prediction of coronary heart disease within a cohort of men and women.

The MONICA study aimed to measure the trends in cardiovascular mortality and coronary heart disease and cerebrovascular disease morbidity and to assess the extent to which these trends are related to changes in known risk factors, daily living habits, health care, or major socio-economic features measured at the same time in defined communities in different countries.

en
